Thailand: apostille and legalization from Canada

Two kinds of file go to Thailand: teaching and work permits, which need a degree and a police check, and marriages, which need proof that the Canadian partner is free to marry. Thailand is outside the Apostille Convention, so after the Canadian apostille the documents are legalized by the Royal Thai Embassy before Thai authorities will accept them.

The route your document takes

The Hague Apostille Convention does not apply to this destination (Thailand). After authentication, the document must be legalized at that country's embassy or consulate. We handle that stage for you.

  1. TranslationCertified translation into the language your destination requires. Depends on your document
  2. NotarizationA notary or commissioner certifies the copy, the signature or the translator's affidavit. Depends on your document
  3. ApostilleThe competent Canadian authority issues the apostille certificate. Always
  4. LegalizationEmbassy or consular stamp, for destinations outside the Hague Convention. Always

This is a preliminary route, not a legal opinion. Convention membership and embassy requirements change; we confirm the exact chain for your file in writing before any work starts.

What people usually send

The documents we most often prepare for this destination. If yours is not here, it is almost certainly still something we handle.

  • University degrees and transcripts
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Affidavits of single status for marriage
  • Birth and divorce certificates
  • Corporate documents

Worth knowing

Canada does not issue a certificate of freedom to marry, so for a wedding in Thailand the usual document is a sworn affidavit of single status. It then needs a Thai translation for the district office, which we arrange so it travels with the rest of the file.

Where is your document from?

The authority that issues the apostille depends on the province the document was issued in, not on where you live.
